    When I started you had the YTS scheme where you went to college one day a week and the other four days you were on a placement with an electrical contractor. you were not employed by the contractor and you were paid by the YTS (and I think the electrical contractor was paid a bit for training you) In most cases I know that after your time came to an end the company would take you on if they could. The problem I hear a lot is not being able to get apprenticeships and as said going to college full-time or day release and then a part-time job. After they have done the formal qualifications then calling themselves an improver and go from job to job via agencies. There doesn't seem to be a lot of structured practical learning on the job

    Interesting conversation. This is among the reasons Apprentice 121 exists. Now working in the industry of things and among grass roots week to week. Nearly 5 years, over 7000 into employed trainee positions, 100k plus of support to training providers and lots more. Was always my hope others in industry would start to do more.

    The IR test is also worth doing to test the cable for possible manufacturer defects. Apparently there is a lot of poor quality cable or fake cable out there. I think Aaron Walstow at Doncaster Cables done a youtube video on it with Gaz from eFIXX.

    One disadvantage of a radial i can think of would be loss of cpc near the circuit start- all sockets and connected loads beyond lose their earth and the customer wouldn't know. Another disadvantage is the need for bigger boards. I wired my new kitchen in a 4mm ring on a 32a rcbo, The thinking behind it for me was any loss in ring continuity wouldn't be an issue as the cable is big enough for a 32amp device where as a 2.5mm ring isn't when a break occurs. also i could get a really long ring and just have one rcbo saving space.

    In the practice where I worked, they installed the monitor but it's blank when the outside end rings so we can't actually see the person ringing. Also the exit button doesn't open the door at all. Is there something we are missing? Thanks

    My AM2 is a week today, I'm one of the people who just ticked 'i am confident' on every box just to try to pass the AM2. If I don't go in for the AM2 i'll stay at the current job where I dont get the opportunities to practice on things im not too confident on as I can't find any other job as every where want qualified sparks - its a catch 22 really, hopefully i pass on monday

    The reason why we switched from Radial to Ring was it used less wire and has less connections in the FB. Now manufacturers want to sell you bigger FB/CU and more wire. Regards cable sizes, sparkies have always used oversized cables because they can't do the maths. You can run an electric shower off 2.5mm with no more overheating than you can detect in a kettle lead.

    I trained in France where it is all radial and dual pole breakers. Ring circuits with 32 amp breakers sounds like a recipe for disaster. Way to high with much potential to go wrong. Keep the breaking points low and the amount of sockets on each circuit defined. Simple and safe. Not perfect but compared to ring mains....?

    • @station-7
      @station-7 3 місяці тому

      And yet no one’s dying from these dangerous ring mains in their houses after a century of living with them.

    • @jasonmaguire9425
      @jasonmaguire9425 2 місяці тому

      @@station-7 actually they do. There are house fires. Most are probably saved by the fuse in the plug which you don't need in radial circuits when designed correctly. The reason you need a fuse is because 32A is way too high for domestic appliances that aren't in the kitchen. The 32A breaker isn't going to break is it!? Why does the rest of the world use radial circuits? Remember the ring circuit was brought in only because resources were scant and not as a system with the most safety in mind.

    Most if not all countries use radial and not ring. The danger of the ring is heavy louds are plugged in inadvertently at the origin or near origin of the ring the cable can easily be overloaded due to most of the current taking the shortest route back to the distribution board

  • @tonywatson1412

    Design and placing of end of radial socket could be taken into account. vis a vie overloading....and if it could.. maybe be a biggish load .. dedicated circuit ?

  • @craigharvey17

    The customer owns the meter tails from the meter to the consumer unit. The dno doesn't care what size they are, it could be a bit of string and they wouldn't want anything to do with it. The section from cut out to the meter is theirs, and they rarely upgrade that either. I've fitted ev chargers where there are 16mm tails in place, they've upgraded the fuse to 100a and left their 16mm in place.

  • @Cornz38

    My house is fed by overhead cables, one of which is at least 10 meters long as it goes to my neighbours house. They break their own rules. My meter tails are over 4 meters long and have been for over 20 years.

  • @ningis21
    @ningis21 5 місяців тому

    Instead of the switch you show in the video....could I use a time delayed RCD or even a RCBO in its own enclosure as a switch as it also provides greater fault protection and faster disconnection speed of my longer tails?

    • @ScolmoreGroup
      @ScolmoreGroup 4 місяці тому

      There would be no reason why an RCD or RCBO could not be used for overload fault protection. If it was tails that were going to be used as opposed to SWA and they were going to be exposed, then there would be the need for mechanical protection that would come in the form of an RCD / RCBO 😄

    1:47 How do you do the AM2 without an NVQ? I thought AM2 is the final unit in the NVQ when everything else is complete?

    • @ScolmoreGroup
      @ScolmoreGroup 6 місяців тому

      It depends on the training providers- you could be entered during the final stages of an NVQ, but you would complete the portfolio while waiting to undertake the assessment. It is recommended to complete an NVQ portfolio first.

    In my opinion only, SPDs should be installed in a domestic setting at the very least when a board change is happening. So many manufacturers have now come out with bundle boards combining type A RCBOs with SPDs. It's a very easy upgrade option that will look after the customers equipment in the event that those pesky transient voltages go wandering where you don’t want them. It does make sense to talk to the customer about the option of with or without. Hopefully, the installer can get across how beneficial these are, and they won't get left behind as the world gets upgraded!

  • @sergiofernandez3725
    @sergiofernandez3725 Рік тому

    I personally don't think SPD requires a conversation with a customer. They protect electronics to a certain extent. Now how many devices in your home or business premises can you find that don't contain electronics?
